The Ardennes offensive was one of the final large offensives executed by the German armed forces in order to turn the tide on the allies. Also known as the Battle of the Bulge the attack was performed by numerous division. Spearhead of the 1st SS Panzer Division was the Kampfgruppe Peiper, which consisted of remnants of elite units bolstered together, including the heavy Konigstiger tanks. The Kampfgruppe managed to penetrate fairly deep into allied defensive lines until its line became to stretched out. Counterattacks by the allied resulted in high German material losses and the retreat of Kampfgruppe survivors.
