Leather (belt) plating, decorations and clasps
Among many metal detecting findings are very different types of items which were all used for leather/ clothing purposes. During many ages fabrics were used for standard clothing like trousers, shirts, hats and jackets. All were held together or supplemented by leather belts with combinations of clasps and buckles.
All other types of equipment and horse/ cattle gear also consisted of combinations of leather (belts) and clasps. Many types and models existed throughout the centuries, resulting in a large collection of items which are sometimes difficult to identify as being relating to such purposes.
Rivets were used to hold pieces of leather together; this could be anything for many centuries, like clothing/ jackets, pouches, light and heavy (horse) straps, battle gear, aprons, etc.
Platings were used to decorate or 'harden' items like belts and other gear.
Plating in many different shapes; these could also be used on items which held leather pieces, like furniture. The practial appliance of plating was very universal for many centuries and even in use since the Roman era. The pictures on below to the right also has a rivet with small piece of leather, another rivet and a ring.
Two decorative platings: to the left a heart shaped plating 1250-1650 (PAN 05-02-03-53), late middle ages/ early modern ages. To the right a more modern small piece of plating made out of brass.
Rivets, as being used to hold leather straps. The piece below shows this perfectly: 3 pieces of thick leather held together by (originally) 5 rivets. Most likely used for heavy (horse/ ox) gear. The picture above to the left also shows a fairly large round plating with square pin - used for something large, or even furniture.
