SAM & AAA

The Swiss Army Museum has a limited number of SAM and AAA pieces on exhibit – and again most of them are very interesting and/ or prototypes.

The Bristol Bloodhounds were used by only six countries during the early days of the Cold War. These were used as last-defense heavy SAM’s against enemy bombers which were able to breakthrough the fighter waves. One can be seen in full colors outside the SMM-Halle and a second one in original colors inside. The Bloodhounds, Swiss designation BL-64, were active in Switzerland until 1999!

Oerlikon developed some of the first SAM’s in the early 1947’s: the RSA and the RSD 58. Both prototypes are on display in the SMM-Halle. More prototypes were produced and evaluated with other countries but never saw production. The third Oerlikon SAM on display is the RSE Kriens, developed in 1959. This type lost the competition for the Swiss order to the British Bloodhound and also never got into production.

Other Oerlikon AAA guns on exhibit are an Oerlikon GDF 2x35mm and Oerlikon Diana Zwillings 25mm. These are supplemented by a Swedish Bofors 40mm L/60 and a Russian made ZU 23/2.
