MOWAG (Motorwagenfabrik AG), founded in 1950 in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland, began with troop carriers and diversified into ambulances, fire trucks, electric vehicles, and dummy tanks. Over time, the company focused on military-grade wheeled armored vehicles and became part of General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS-Mowag) in 2004. Today it still manufactures and supplies  Eagle 4x4 and Piranha 8x8 armored vehicles to the Swiss Army. Many of these, and former types, have been delivered to countries worldwide.

PIRANHA Family

The PIRANHA is the success story of MOWAG. Since 1972 five generations have been developed. Derivates of the PIRANHA are the well known Stryker (USA) and LAV (CAN). Since 1972 all imaginable models have been produced: troop carrier, anti-tank, ambulance, command, recovery, CBRN mortar carrier, training, police, engineer, EW and some other specializes types.

Together with the derivates taken into account many thousands of the PIRANHA have been produced and are still core vehicles of several armed forces in 2025. Production orders and development are still running these days as division of General Dynamics. The Swiss Army Museum has prototypes of the PIRANHA on display:

EAGLE Family

The light armored wheeled reconnaissance 4x4 vehicle EAGLE has many competitors but still has several countries as buyers. Nowadays it is owned and marketed by General Dynamics and is currently in production. Like the PIRANHA it currently has 5 generations.

The EAGLE I was based on the HUMVEE chassis and was used by the Swiss and Danish forces; the II and III generations were upgraded versions developed for the Swiss army. The EAGLE IV is based on a MOWAG chassis and still in use by the Danish and German forces.

All generations are still in use in many variants. The Eagle V is the current generation which also has a 6x6 version. All types are still in use and in production.
